In this context, we address questions of planning, steering, management and funding of higher education institutions both within higher education institutions and regarding the relationship between higher education institutions and the state.

Academic studies and students:
This research area deals with the changing framework of teaching and learning – such as the transition to the Bachelor-Master structure, accreditation and quality assurance, the introduction of tuition fees – and their effects on the conditions of studies as well as the effectiveness of the course of studies.

Transitions school – higher education – work:
This research area is about the passages between school, higher education and work, and the transitions from one area to the next. The core is the Bavarian graduate panel (Bayerisches Absolventenpanel), a regular survey of the graduates from all Bavarian higher education institutions, including universities and universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen). About one and a half years and five years after graduation, graduates are asked to report on their study experiences and their transition to work.

Research and academic careers:
Academic careers in higher education are investigated in this field, including the early stages (PhD and post-doc phases). Another focus is on the analysis of cooperation between science and industry, cluster policy and its supporting instruments as well as innovation and technology transfer.
