On 1st April 2017, the research project “SeSaBa – Success and Withdrawal of International Students in Germany“ launched. The joint research project is promoted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the funding project “academic success and drop-out phenomena” for four years.
Description of the Project
The number of international students has increased by about 60% during the past ten years. At the same time, this group has shown a significantly high drop-out rate. On this note, the Bavarian State Institute for Higher Education Research and Planning (IHF), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the FernUniversität in Hagen analyse the determinants of success and withdrawal of international students in Germany. Specifically, the study concentrates on students from abroad that study to gain a German Bachelor's- or Master's degree.
The primary aim of the joint research project SeSaBa is the interdisciplinary approach towards integrating previous findings on rates of success and drop-out rates among higher education students to produce a comprehensive theoretical model. The model should adequately reflect and empirically analyze the relevant aspects of the specific study situation of international students in Germany while also providing practical conceptions of action.
The research project is interdisciplinary in its approach and thus includes sociological and psychological aspects to answer the following questions:
- What sociodemographic, social, and psychological factors affect rates of success and withdrawal of international students?
- What institutional and course-related factors affect rates of success and drop-out rates among international students?
- Are there certain critical events during the course of study that can be identified as particularly critical for course progression, or which significantly increase the tendency to drop out?
- What role do political and legal frameworks play?
Based on the research findings, a practical guideline for higher education institutions, including possible actions to decrease drop-out rates, will be developed. Furthermore, all research findings will be made accessible to relevant stakeholders to enhance the scientific discussion about the success and withdrawal among international students.
